Near Miss Day !

Noooo Not kind of Near Miss!

Near Miss Day commemorates the time when the 4581 Asclepius asteroid had a close encounter with hitting earth, passing by about 425,000 miles away. This may seem like a long distance, but in space distance, it is very close and missed striking the earth by about 6 hours.

It was closest to earth between March 22 and 23, 1989, but was not discovered until March 31, by astronomers Henry E. Holt and Norman G. Thomas the Palomar Observatory in California.

The asteroid, named after the Greek god of medicine, is about 300 meters wide and would have released energy comparable to a 600 megaton bomb—larger than any nuclear bomb ever created—if it would have hit the earth. It would have left a crater many miles in diameter, and would have been capable of obliterating a large city.

The probability asteroids and meteorites will impact earth is measured by the Torino Scale and the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale. Similar near misses happen every couple years .

Is it really the weekend?

Yes, the weekend is here, my friend, and there are no scheduled asteroid impacts of any significance. Therefore, you can sleep-in tomorrow morning without fear. That is unless JD insists on his usual early breakfast. Ahh, such is the life of farmers.

How's the flood situation? Has the water receded yet, allowing you to use the local roads?

Oh he'll get his breakfast first thing alright. Our road was damaged so as to be one lane by the floodwaters but much of the water has receded to within a bank full torrent of a river. The only remaining snow to melt are the high stacked piles and the shaded areas.

If I could just keep from breaking my nails would help a bunch.
